A Customary Court in Rumuogba, Rivers State, has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor must stop using her former husband’s surname, more than a decade after their divorce.
The case, filed by Chief Sam Ngbor under suit number OCC/9/2021, sought a legal order to prevent his ex-wife from continuing to bear his name.
Following arguments from both parties’ legal representatives, the court, chaired by H.A. Nnokam alongside member L.G. Wokeh, granted the request. The ruling declared that Mrs. Ngbor had no legal right to use the surname “Ngbor” or any variation of it without her former husband’s permission.
The court ordered her to revert to her maiden name or choose another name, explicitly forbidding her from identifying as “Mrs. Kate Ngbor” or “Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor.”
Neither party was present in court for the judgment, but their legal counsels represented them.
