The federal government has rehabilitated 3,030 inmates in correctional facilities across the country, equipping them with vocational skills to support their reintegration into society.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this known during a ministerial briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation in Abuja.

He also highlighted efforts to strengthen security in correctional centers to prevent external threats.

He stated, “Between July and December 2024, a total of 3,030 inmates were trained in various skills, including carpentry, tailoring, poultry farming, fishery, and hairdressing. Additionally, violent extremist offenders underwent rehabilitation through the Nigerian Correctional Service’s De-radicalization Programme.”

Tunji-Ojo further disclosed that more than 50 inmates are currently pursuing academic programs through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Special Study Centers within correctional facilities. In addition, 32 former inmates received support materials in 2024 to assist in their reintegration into society.

To improve prison security, the minister confirmed that measures have been implemented to reinforce correctional centers against external attacks.

He also announced an agreement with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to conduct biometric data capturing for inmates.

Beyond prison reforms, he revealed that the ministry has commenced full operations at newly established federal marriage registries in Jalingo (Taraba State), Akure (Ondo State), Ibadan (Oyo State), Makurdi (Benue State), Asaba (Delta State), and Uyo (Akwa Ibom State).

Additionally, he stated that the government has introduced the enhanced e-Passport service in diplomatic missions across several countries, including Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

Regarding fire safety, Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the Federal Fire Service has modernized its operations by improving communication systems and integrating Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for better emergency response and incident management.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised Tunji-Ojo for driving key reforms that have improved the ministry’s efficiency.

He noted that the minister’s efforts align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, ensuring better service delivery to Nigerians.
