Judith Okoli, a Nigerian nurse, has gained public attention after making the unexpected decision to leave her job in the United States and return to Nigeria permanently, seeking a more meaningful and balanced lifestyle.
At a time when many Nigerians are aspiring to migrate abroad for better economic prospects, Okoli’s choice has sparked discussion and reflection on happiness, mental well-being, and the true meaning of a fulfilling life.
In a video shared online, Okoli addressed questions from people surprised by her move.
Speaking in Pidgin English, she said, “People keep asking me, ‘Why would you leave America? Are you okay? You want to suffer in Nigeria?’ But I want people to understand that money isn’t everything — at least not for everyone. Not for me.”
She explained that her decision came after deep reflection, realizing that financial security alone did not bring her the emotional satisfaction she longed for.
“You can earn N100 and still feel miserable — stressed, undervalued, and disconnected.
Meanwhile, someone else earns N50 and feels content, spends time with family, sleeps peacefully, and enjoys life,” she said, emphasizing that quality of life outweighs income for her.
Okoli also spoke about how the pursuit of better earnings abroad often strains family ties and leads to emotional isolation.
“Just look at what life in the West is doing to us,” she said.
“Families are torn apart — one sibling in Germany, another in Canada, another in Dubai. Some haven’t seen each other in years, all in the name of chasing a better life.
But at what cost?”
Her sentiments have resonated widely on social media, igniting conversations about migration, mental health, and redefining success in today’s fast-paced world.
