The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in Abuja has issued a warning to motorists, advising them not to engage with touts for vehicle number plates.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Director of the DRTS, Abdulateef Bello, said fraudsters posing as officials are exploiting the current scarcity of number plates to deceive vehicle owners.
Bello explained that the shortage is due to inconsistent and insufficient supply from the National Vehicle Identification Scheme plant.
He assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the issue.
He emphasized that the DRTS does not authorize any individual or agent to distribute number plates outside its official self-service portal: https://selfservice.fctevreg.com.
“The directorate firmly disassociates itself from these fraudulent activities and urges the public to report any suspicious individuals or illegal acts,” he stated.
He added that all approved fees for number plates and related services are clearly listed on the DRTS website, and urged motorists to insist on paying only the official rates.
