Pope Francis died on Monday at the age of 88, the Vatican announced in an official statement.

As reported by Vanguard, his passing came just a day after he made a warmly welcomed appearance at Saint Peter’s Square during Easter Sunday celebrations.

“At 7:35 a.m. (0535 GMT) this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the statement released by the Vatican.
