The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union (BSU) has started a $25,000 fundraising campaign to support the burial of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver who was tragically shot and killed in Center City, Philadelphia.

Bolaji, a husband, father, and grandfather, lost his life on April 16, 2025, while waiting for a passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Lounge. According to reports, he was caught in a violent altercation when two individuals exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee and began shooting.

He was hit in the back of the head and later crashed his vehicle a block away on Chestnut Street.

As of Monday, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large.

In response, BSU Philadelphia Chapter President Alex Morris launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist Bolaji’s family.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden, senseless loss of Olatunji Bolaji—a 77‑year‑old father, grandfather, husband, and devoted rideshare driver murdered while simply doing his job,” the campaign states.

So far, $1,712 has been raised from 19 donors toward the $25,000 target.

Morris explained that BSU had a longstanding relationship with the Bolaji family and is stepping in to support Bolaji’s widow, Charice Bolaji, and their children during this difficult time.

The funds will be used to cover funeral costs ($12,000), temporary living expenses for the family ($5,000), and counseling services ($3,000).

Any additional contributions will go toward a trust fund for Bolaji’s grandchildren, including one yet to be born.

All donations will be transferred directly to Charice Bolaji’s bank account.

If she is unable to receive them, Morris has pledged to deliver the funds personally, with full transparency and proper documentation.

“Ola drove countless neighbors home safely; now it’s our turn to support his family through their darkest hour,” the statement reads.

“Whether it’s $5 or $500, every bit helps. Please share this campaign and keep the Bolaji family in your thoughts and prayers.”
