The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of 28-year-old Dauda Samuel over his alleged involvement in a police recruitment scam, identity theft, and cyber-related fraud.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the arrest was made by the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) following credible intelligence and multiple public complaints.
The suspect was reportedly impersonating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba, on Facebook.
He allegedly used the fake identity to promote a non-existent police recruitment exercise and extorted money from unsuspecting individuals with false promises of employment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Samuel created and operated fake Facebook accounts using DIG Mba’s name and image without authorization.
He was arrested in Panda Village, Nasarawa State, and has since confessed to the crime.
He also provided useful information now aiding the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are working to identify possible accomplices and analyze the suspect’s digital trail through forensic methods.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, issued a strong warning to cybercriminals, urging them to desist or face legal consequences.
He also advised the public to be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true and to take precautions when engaging online.
