AGF denies extradition proceedings against Simon Ekpa

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has refuted claims that the Federal Government has initiated extradition proceedings against separatist agitator Simon Ekpa.

In a statement issued on Friday by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Publicity at the Ministry of Justice, Fagbemi clarified that recent media reports misrepresented his remarks at a stakeholders’ forum held Thursday in Abuja.

According to the AGF, what he said during the question-and-answer session was that Nigeria is in contact with Finnish authorities to ensure Ekpa is held accountable for his actions.

He emphasized that because the alleged offenses are transnational, Nigeria is closely watching the legal process in Finland before deciding on any further action.

Fagbemi urged the media to refrain from speculative reporting on such sensitive matters.

Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently on trial in Finland for terrorism-related charges brought by Finnish prosecutors.
