Delta moves to profile herdsmen to prevent farmer clashes

The Delta State Government has launched a plan to profile herdsmen and cattle owners operating within its borders in a bid to reduce conflicts between herders and farmers.

This was announced by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Livestock and Inter-Ethnic Relations, Chief Jeffrey Azagba, during a meeting with the Delta State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Asaba on Wednesday.

Azagba expressed concern over recent incidents involving armed herders in some communities, stating that profiling would help identify those responsible for unrest.

“It is troubling that armed herdsmen are wreaking havoc in certain areas.

Profiling them will help us isolate the bad actors and promote peace across the state,” he said.

“As an agrarian state, Delta must be able to expand its agricultural output without the fear of insecurity.”

He called on MACBAN to submit a full list of its members, noting that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is determined to eliminate any threats to his administration’s peace and development goals.

In response, MACBAN’s state secretary, Mustapha Suleiman, welcomed the initiative and pledged the group’s support.

“We are grateful for the government’s approach and are ready to cooperate fully to ensure peaceful coexistence,” Suleiman said.
