A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has called on the party to consider reuniting with former member and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday, Sowunmi emphasized the need for the PDP to reflect on its political future and explore reconciliation with Obi, especially in light of the widespread support he garnered during the last presidential election.
“Peter Obi, a former PDP member and a prominent figure from the South-East, left due to perceived exclusion,” Sowunmi said. “He went on to secure 6.2 million votes in the 2023 election.
Any thoughtful and fair-minded PDP member should now be asking: ‘How do we bring Peter back?’ The momentum behind him is real and organic.”
He criticized the PDP’s internal challenges and recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as self-inflicted wounds that could have been avoided with better strategy and leadership.
“There are always external factors in politics, but when the problems persist, the blame lies within,” Sowunmi said.
“The party’s recurring inability to innovate and reorganize is costing us dearly.”
Addressing perceptions of President Bola Tinubu, Sowunmi cautioned political rivals not to underestimate him due to his age or appearance.
“People make the mistake of judging Tinubu by his physical condition.
But intellectually, he is a giant. Underestimating him is a strategic error,” he warned.
“Unfortunately, some in my party act like he’s easy to beat politically. What do they know that he doesn’t?”
Sowunmi’s remarks come amid growing calls within opposition ranks for unity and renewed direction as the country’s political landscape continues to evolve.
