Controversial Nigerian musician Speed Darlington has formally responded to an invitation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) over a viral video in which he appeared to suggest having had sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl.
The agency had initially summoned the singer to appear at its Abuja office for questioning last week, following public backlash over the video.
After failing to show up, NAPTIP issued a fresh invitation for June 2. In a recent statement issued by his legal team and posted on Instagram, Speed Darlington requested a rescheduling of the meeting to June 26, 2025.
In the statement addressed to NAPTIP’s Director General, Speed Darlington acknowledged receiving the agency’s letter and denied any wrongdoing.
He maintained that his comments in the video were not factual, but intended solely for entertainment.
“I have never engaged in or contemplated any form of sexual misconduct,” the statement read.
“The said Instagram video was created purely for entertainment purposes and does not reflect any real-life events involving myself or any female, minor or adult.”
He further described the video as a misunderstood attempt at clout-chasing and apologized for any offense it may have caused.
“Without admitting to any wrongdoing, I extend my sincere apologies for any distress or confusion my actions may have caused the public.
To those who understand satire and internet culture, the video was clearly intended as a joke.”
Speed Darlington affirmed his respect for the law and expressed his willingness to cooperate with authorities.
He assured NAPTIP of his readiness to provide further clarification in person on June 26, 2025.
