NAFDAC seizes N35m worth of expired beverages in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intercepted expired beverages valued at N35 million in Kaduna State.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Andrew Tamanuwa, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement in Kaduna, said the operation followed a tip-off received on Sunday evening from a concerned citizen.

According to Tamanuwa, the tip-off revealed that two buses and a Golf wagon loaded with expired non-alcoholic drinks were en route to Kwanar Dangora in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.

The agency intercepted the vehicles and arrested the owner.

During the operation, officials confiscated 700 packs of Schweppes and 300 packs of Fanta Orange.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a warehouse on Bayajidda Road, Kaduna, containing an additional 588 packs of Schweppes, 3,508 packs of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, and 87 packs of Fanta Orange—all expired since November 2024.

The expired products have been moved to NAFDAC’s warehouse and are awaiting destruction.

Tamanuwa noted that investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved.

He urged the public to report suspicious products, especially during festive seasons, to help protect public health.

He reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring consumer safety and maintaining vigilance against expired and unsafe products.
