Ondo Speaker explains resignation of Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader

The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, has confirmed the resignation of two key principal officers:

Deputy Speaker Abayomi Akinruntan and Majority Leader Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi.

Their resignations are reportedly part of an effort to maintain political balance within the state, in line with informal power-sharing arrangements.

Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, stepped down voluntarily. In his resignation letter, read by the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jayeiola, Akinruntan said the decision was taken “to align with the conventional arrangement in power-sharing of elective positions in the state.” His absence from Tuesday’s plenary session was noted.

Similarly, Majority Leader Ogunmolasuyi, who represents Owo—home to Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami—also resigned but did not provide an official reason.

However, sources suggest his departure is also linked to the state’s informal zoning agreements. Ogunmolasuyi was present during the plenary.

In a swift replacement move, Ololade Gbegude, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated as the new Deputy Speaker. His nomination was put forward by Oluwatoyin Japheth (Akoko North East) and seconded by Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1).

Speaker Oladiji praised both former officers for their dignified exits and contributions to the House. “Akinruntan has been a peaceful ally and a strong supporter of this House,” he said.

“I also appreciate the former Majority Leader, Ogunmolasuyi, for his stabilizing role and dependability.”
