The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 28 individuals suspected of involvement in cult-related activities across the state.
In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, said the arrests were made during coordinated raids on criminal hideouts within Benin City on June 4, 2025, between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Following thorough screening, 19 of the suspects were found to have credible links to cultism and have since been charged to court.
Yamu further disclosed that three of the suspects confessed to being members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities and were arraigned accordingly.
“The Edo State Command has sustained its fight against crime through visibility policing, community engagement, and continuous raids on criminal hideouts,” the statement read.
“In continuation of its efforts to eradicate cultism, the command has also begun house-to-house arrests of identified cult members in a bid to either eliminate cultism or reduce it to the barest minimum.”
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, expressed confidence that the ongoing operations would enhance public safety and urged individuals involved in cultism to desist, leave the state, or face the full force of the law under the Edo State Secret Cult and Other Related Activities (Prohibition) Law.
