Fayose backs Tinubu’s economic reforms, rules out defection from PDP

Former Ekiti State Governor and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Ayodele Fayose, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as bold steps aimed at preventing national collapse.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Monday following a meeting with the president, Fayose said his visit was a personal gesture to encourage Tinubu amid the nation’s economic challenges.

He noted that while immediate results may not be evident, the administration’s efforts are helping to stabilise the country.

“There’s no miracle that can fix things overnight,” Fayose said. “My visit is personal, to further encourage him to continue doing what he’s doing for Nigerians.

No one is saying it is easy, but bold and necessary decisions are being made.”

Fayose recalled that he had supported Tinubu’s leadership even while serving as a PDP governor, stressing that his stance was based on belief in Tinubu’s capabilities, not political affiliation.

“Even as a sitting PDP governor, I never hid my support for him. Leadership is not easy, especially in a time of economic crisis,” he said. “There’s a difference between transformation and stabilisation.

The president has taken some courageous steps, and these give us hope for the future.”

Addressing speculation about a possible defection, Fayose firmly dismissed the idea, insisting he would remain in the PDP despite internal issues.

“Ayo Fayose will not move from the PDP to any political party — not even the APC. I am 65 years old this year,” he stated.

However, he warned that the PDP was in a state of crisis and needed urgent reforms.

“Without doubt, the PDP is in trouble. That’s the gospel truth,” he said. “If steps are not taken quickly, the party could become a carcass. That is the truth.”
