Oyo govt confirms no casualties in Iyamopo hill rock movement
The Oyo State Government has confirmed that no lives were lost during the recent tremor and rock displacement at Iyamopo Hill in Igbeti, located in the Olorunsogo Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, assured the public that the incident was the result of natural geological activity and posed no immediate danger.
He explained that the rock movement was triggered by physical weathering—specifically, prolonged exposure to intense heat between February and May followed by a sudden drop in temperature.
This expansion and contraction caused the rock to crack, peel, and shift, leading to the minor tremors reported over the weekend.
Oyelade emphasized that no casualties had been recorded and urged residents to remain calm.
In response to the incident, the state government has deployed a team from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency, led by Director General Mr. Biodun Oni, to conduct an on-site evaluation.
The government is also working with geologists from the University of Ibadan to better understand the geological activity and recommend long-term measures.
As a precaution, residents living near the affected area have been advised to temporarily relocate while assessments continue.
“The safety and well-being of our people remain a top priority,” Oyelade said.
“We encourage the public to stay calm and follow official updates as investigations progress.”
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and pledged to keep the public informed of any new developments.
