Police arrest couple for scalding widow with hot water

A couple in Ebonyi State, Chigozie and his wife, Ginika, have been arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting their neighbour, a widow identified as Cynthia Ucha, by pouring hot water on her during a dispute.

The incident occurred at Akidi Street in Abakaliki, the state capital, following a verbal disagreement between Ginika and the widow, which reportedly escalated into a violent attack.

An eyewitness, Ozioma, said the altercation turned physical when Ginika allegedly called on her husband, children, and brother-in-law to join in the assault.

“They beat her mercilessly with sticks and other dangerous objects,” Ozioma claimed.

“While the victim was already severely injured, Ginika fetched a pot of boiling water and poured it on her.”

The witness also alleged that the couple had previously threatened the widow multiple times since she moved into the compound.

“She’s been quiet and keeps to herself, but Ginika and her family have constantly harassed her,” Ozioma added.

The suspects were initially held at the Central Police Station and later transferred to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit at the Police Headquarters in Abakaliki.

Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
