PDP, APC clash over EFCC arrest of 15 former Plateau lawmakers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State on Thursday exchanged accusations following the arrest of 15 former state lawmakers, including ex-Speaker Moses Thomas Sule, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to reports, the EFCC apprehended the former legislators on June 17, 2025, over allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.

The ex-lawmakers, who currently serve as liaison officers to Governor Caleb Mutfwang in their respective constituencies, are accused of violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, as well as breaching procurement regulations.

Among those arrested are Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Philip Gwom, Timothy Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok, Agbalak Ibrahim, Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren, and Paul Datugun.

In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Amande, the PDP condemned the arrests, describing them as politically motivated and orchestrated by APC leaders to intimidate opposition members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The Peoples Democratic Party wakes up to a disturbing trend with the arrest of the former Speaker and 14 others, which we believe is a politically-driven move by APC leaders in Plateau State,” the statement said.

The PDP accused the ruling party of using federal anti-corruption agencies as tools for political witch-hunts, adding that such actions aim to weaken the PDP-led government in the state.

“It is disheartening to see our members paraded like criminals.

This is a calculated attempt to erode the credibility of the PDP and silence opposition voices,” the party stated.

The PDP also reiterated its commitment to upholding justice, democratic principles, and the rule of law, while urging citizens to resist attempts to politicize public institutions.

“The misuse of institutions like the EFCC undermines democracy and threatens citizens’ rights.

The PDP remains resolute in defending democratic values in Nigeria,” the statement added.

Responding to the allegations, Plateau APC Chairman Rufus Bature dismissed the claims as baseless, stating that his party had no involvement in the arrests.

“These accusations by the PDP are entirely false and a product of their imagination,” Bature said. “The EFCC is carrying out its lawful duties.

At no point did the APC discuss or interfere in the matter involving the former lawmakers.”

Bature insisted that the APC respects due process and has no influence over the EFCC’s operations.
