The Lagos State Government has sealed an illegal abattoir on Succo Road, Oko Oba in Agege, and arrested four individuals for slaughtering animals in unsanitary conditions.
The operation, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and led by Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Cole (retd), followed a tip-off from a concerned resident.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the action is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on environmental violations and safeguard public health.
“Our swift response underscores our zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions, whether in public facilities or residential areas,” Wahab stated.
The illegal slaughterhouse was reportedly located within a private residence, directly opposite the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Barracks and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) yard.
Officials also seized contaminated beef and goat meat to prevent it from reaching consumers.
“This operation follows the recent closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir and highlights the serious public health risks posed by such activities,” Wahab added.
He warned that all arrested suspects would be prosecuted under Lagos environmental laws to deter future offenders.
