The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the death of one person and injuries to three others following a gun battle with armed robbers in the Apo Resettlement area of Abuja.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on June 23, 2025, at Zone E, Apo Resettlement.
According to her, the police responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from a motorcyclist who reported an ongoing robbery. Officers confronted the suspects in a gunfight.
“During the operation, three individuals sustained varying degrees of injury. Sadly, one of them later died at the hospital,” Adeh stated.
She added that a vehicle belonging to one of the victims was recovered at the scene.
A joint manhunt involving police operatives and local vigilante groups is currently underway to track down the fleeing suspects.
The Command also addressed a viral video showing a religious leader claiming that one of his congregants identified the robbers as “herdsmen children” and alleged police inaction during the incident.
“These claims are completely false and misleading,” the police said, warning that such unverified statements can erode public trust, create panic, and hinder ongoing security efforts.
Reiterating its earlier account of the incident, the Command urged religious and community leaders to verify sensitive information through official channels before making public declarations.
In a further appeal, the police asked the religious leader to encourage the said congregant to come forward with any useful information that could support the investigation.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to stay vigilant, remain calm, and report any suspicious activity. Citizens were also advised to rely solely on verified police updates for accurate information.
