Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes during a town union meeting in Anambra State.
The victims were reportedly shot dead at close range while holding a peaceful gathering in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area.
A disturbing video of the aftermath circulated online on July 1, showing the mangled bodies of the victims.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru expressed deep shock and condemnation of the act, describing it as a “senseless and barbaric attack on law-abiding citizens.”
He revealed that he had reached out to Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out. “I have full confidence in the Anambra State Government and relevant security agencies to swiftly apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.
Any failure or compromise in this matter could strain the relationship between our two states,” Nwifuru warned.
The governor further described the killings as a direct attack on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life. “This heinous crime defies all logic and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” he added.
He appealed to residents of Ebonyi State, especially families and communities affected by the tragedy, to remain calm and allow the authorities to complete their investigations. “Reprisal actions will only worsen the situation.
We must not allow barbarism to take root in our society,” he cautioned.
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all Ebonyi indigenes, both within and outside the state.
