Veteran journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has pledged his support for the newly unveiled African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, while warning President Bola Tinubu not to jeopardize Nigeria’s democracy in pursuit of a second term.
Speaking on ARISE News on Wednesday, Momodu reminded Tinubu of his pro-democracy background and cautioned that any attempt to cling to power at the expense of national stability could tarnish his legacy.
“Once upon a time, you were one of our leaders in the fight for democracy.
But what will it profit you if you serve two, three terms, or rule forever, only to have your name recorded in history with shame?” he questioned.
He noted that Tinubu had already achieved what iconic leaders like Obafemi Awolowo, MKO Abiola, and Nnamdi Azikiwe could not — becoming president — and warned that forcing a second term “at all costs” could diminish those historic gains.
Momodu also criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leadership for acting too late to address internal grievances and rebuild the party.
Speaking on the formation of the ADC coalition, he revealed that it was the result of over 18 months of strategic planning involving opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
He said meetings were discreetly held in London, Morocco, and Ghana to avoid political sabotage.
According to him, the ADC is no longer a marginal party but has transformed into a credible opposition platform with a fully functional interim leadership structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
He added that while concerned Nigerians had appealed to elder statesmen for guidance, many within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had become deaf to reason.
“Some are too intoxicated by power to listen.
But before they collapse our democracy, some people must stand up. That’s what the ADC did today,” Momodu asserted.
