A High Court in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced a 44-year-old woman, Goodness Daniel, to five years in prison for human trafficking, with an option to pay a fine of N2 million.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Peace Otti on June 27, 2025, found Daniel guilty of buying and selling human beings—an offence that violates Section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
The case was prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Anambra State Command.
In addition to the prison term and fine, the court also ordered Daniel to pay N2.6 million in restitution to the victim, who testified as a witness during the trial.
Daniel was first arraigned on July 9, 2024, on charges of human trafficking.
NAPTIP, in a statement, described the conviction as a significant step in its fight against human trafficking and a demonstration of its commitment to protecting victims’ rights nationwide.
