Tensions are rising in the Senate as the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has announced her intention to return to the Red Chamber today (Tuesday), following a court ruling that voided her suspension.
In a viral video shared on social media, Akpoti-Uduaghan addressed her supporters, celebrating her legal victory and confirming her plan to resume legislative duties.
“I thank you for your support. I am glad we are victorious today. We shall resume in the Senate on Tuesday by the grace of God,” she said.
However, the Senate leadership is bracing for a potential confrontation, maintaining that no official action will be taken on the matter until it receives and reviews the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court judgment.
Last Friday, a Federal High Court in Abuja overturned the Senate’s six-month suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan, ruling it excessive, unconstitutional, and a violation of the rights of her constituents.
The court also ordered her immediate reinstatement.
In addition, the court imposed a ₦5 million fine on the senator for contempt over a Facebook post that mocked Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Justice Binta Nyako ruled that the post breached an interim injunction issued on March 4, 2025, which barred all parties from making public comments or social media posts regarding the ongoing legal proceedings.
Responding to the ruling, the Senate said it would await a formal review of the full judgment before deciding on the next steps.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, noted that while the Senate’s legal team was present in court, the full ruling was not read in open court.
He confirmed that a formal request had been submitted to obtain the CTC for clarity on the specific directives of the court.
“Pending receipt and examination of the CTC, and acting on the advice of counsel, the Senate shall refrain from taking any steps that may prejudice its legal position,” the statement read.
As Akpoti-Uduaghan prepares to return to the chamber, all eyes are now on how the Senate leadership will handle the unfolding legal and political drama.
