A police officer serving in Gombe State, ASP Clement Yunana, has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Wednesday evening.

The tragic incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. along Bauchi Road, opposite the Matrix Fuel Station in Tumfure, Akko Local Government Area.

Yunana, aged 50, was reportedly trying to cross the road when an unidentified vehicle heading toward Gombe metropolis knocked him down and fled the scene without offering help.

Confirming the development in a press statement on Friday, the Gombe State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, described the event as “tragic and regrettable.” He said efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the fleeing driver.

“The Command received with deep sorrow the report of the fatal hit-and-run involving one of our own,” Abdullahi said. “ASP Clement Yunana was a dedicated officer attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga Division. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was later confirmed dead.”

Abdullahi appealed to members of the public and eyewitnesses to come forward with any useful information that could aid in identifying the suspect.

Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, also expressed deep condolences to the late officer’s family and colleagues, describing Yunana as a loyal and selfless officer whose service to the nation would not be forgotten.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this painful time,” the statement read. “We remain committed to ensuring that the driver responsible for this tragedy is brought to justice.”

As of the time of filing this report, no arrests have been made, but police say surveillance in the area has been heightened.
