Assault controversy: Ogun psychiatric hospital warns top doctor, suspends student nurse

The Medical Director of the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Dr. Paul Agboola, has addressed allegations of injustice following a reported altercation between the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Olayinka Majekodunmi, and a student nurse, Seyi Ogunjobi.

Dr. Agboola confirmed on Saturday that while Dr. Majekodunmi admitted to using offensive language—including calling the student “stupid” and a “bastard”—he denied physically assaulting Ogunjobi.

As a result, Majekodunmi received a formal warning letter from hospital management.

According to Agboola, a panel chaired by him and comprising senior staff from various hospital departments reviewed the incident, which took place during ward rounds on June 30, 2025.

The disagreement reportedly began when Ogunjobi, upon retrieving a chair, chose to give it to a fellow student rather than the senior consultant, leading to a verbal confrontation.

Dr. Majekodunmi, who appeared before the panel with 12 witnesses, admitted to the verbal outburst but denied any physical aggression.

His witnesses supported this claim. Ogunjobi, on the other hand, was only able to present one staff nurse as a witness, who could not confirm whether he was physically attacked.

Given the inconsistencies in the student’s account and the lack of corroborating evidence, Ogunjobi was suspended as a corrective measure. Agboola emphasized that the suspension was brief—lasting just a day or two—and was intended to reinforce the values of integrity and professionalism expected in nursing.

The student’s father reportedly expressed gratitude to the hospital management for its handling of the matter and appealed for leniency on behalf of his son.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s chapter of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives had earlier protested the suspension, accusing management of bias and warning of possible withdrawal of services if the decision wasn’t reversed within 24 hours.

Agboola said management has met with hospital unions regarding the incident and will meet with the nurses’ union on Monday to continue resolving the issue.
