The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has advised Nigerians travelling to the United States to strictly adhere to the conditions of their visas, warning that any misuse could lead to deportation or permanent entry bans.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, urged travellers to exercise caution and act responsibly when using their U.S. visas.
He emphasized that visa approval does not guarantee immunity from immigration scrutiny.
“Security vetting by U.S. authorities does not end at the point of entry. Visa holders are constantly monitored, and any violation of immigration rules or U.S. laws can result in visa revocation or deportation,” Issa-Onilu said.
He also cautioned travellers against exceeding permitted cash limits without proper declaration and warned against carrying prohibited items in their luggage.
Highlighting the consequences of overstaying visas, Issa-Onilu said violators could face deportation or a lifetime travel ban, which may also impact the chances of other Nigerians with legitimate travel intentions.
The NOA boss advised Nigerian students in the U.S. to ensure they regularise their visa status before expiration and urged transparency when applying for tourist visas, especially for those intending to give birth in the U.S. for citizenship purposes.
“The United States applies strict screening to prevent security threats while encouraging lawful travel under a fair and transparent process,” he noted.
Issa-Onilu called on all Nigerians travelling abroad to represent the country positively by complying with international laws and respecting visa regulations.
