The Rivers State Police Command has qarrested seven suspects in connection with the murder of Bright Owhor, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer who was shot dead by gunmen at his residence on Market Road, Rumuomasi, on July 6.

The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrests on Monday during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, noting that the breakthrough followed a ten-day intelligence-led operation by the command’s anti-kidnapping unit.

“Following meticulous intelligence gathering and technical surveillance, all individuals involved in the killing were identified and apprehended,” she said.

According to Iringe-Koko, the suspects, aged between 22 and 34, played various roles in the attack — including the shooter, gang leader, arms supplier, getaway driver, and handler of stolen vehicles.

She disclosed that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Deygbam cult group and admitted responsibility for the lawyer’s murder.

They also reportedly withdrew funds from the victim’s bank account after the killing.

The suspects further linked their actions to recent violent clashes between rival Deygbam factions — BS and G12 — in the Diobu area of the city.

Items recovered from the suspects include four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a Toyota Camry saloon car, a commercial minibus, and an MTN SIM card.

Iringe-Koko said the arrests form part of a broader police strategy to dismantle criminal syndicates and restore public confidence in law enforcement across Rivers State.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned following the conclusion of investigations.
