A 37-year-old woman, Akanji Kofoworola, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly using her Facebook account to publish false and defamatory content about popular Nollywood actress and entrepreneur, Lizzy Anjorin.

Kofoworola was brought before Magistrate Wahab Balogun by operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fake news publication, and defamation.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Haruna Ibrahim, the defendant and several other bloggers, currently at large allegedly committed the offences between 2023 and 2025 within Lagos State.

The court was told that the accused knowingly posted false statements and rumours about Ms. Anjorin via Facebook, in a manner that could damage the actress’s reputation.

The offences contravene Sections 39, 57, and 150 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.

One of the charges reads: “That you, Akanji Kofoworola ‘F’, and others now at large, between 2023 till date, in Lagos State, within the magisterial district, did unlawfully publish statements and rumours about one Lizzy Anjorin on Facebook, knowing or having reason to believe that such statements were false, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 39 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following her plea, the prosecutor urged the court to remand her in custody.

However, her counsel made an oral bail application, citing the bailable nature of the offences.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate Balogun granted Kofoworola bail in the sum of ₦100,000, with two sureties in like sum. Additional conditions were also attached to the bail.

The matter was adjourned until August 21, 2025, for trial to commence.
