Tension gripped Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Friday following the killing of a 40-year-old farmer, Irmiya Yohanna, and the retaliatory slaughter of livestock by irate residents.
Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, said Yohanna left for his farm on Thursday but failed to return.
A search party later found his body on the farm, with preliminary investigations suggesting he was killed after a confrontation with cattle herders whose animals had strayed into his farmland.
According to the police, angry villagers attacked livestock in retaliation, killing about 20 cows, 19 sheep, and injuring several others.
Officers rescued 249 cows during the unrest and arrested one suspect, Ahmadu Mairiga, in connection with the farmer’s death.
Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the area, meeting with community leaders, traditional rulers, and herder representatives.
He urged residents to remain calm, warning against further violence and assuring that justice would be served.
