A 22-year-old man, Vincent Orjima, was on Friday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly beating and stabbing a woman.
Orjima, whose address was not provided, faces a three-count charge of assault, attempted murder, and breach of peace. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutor Inspector Edet Ekpo told the court that the incident occurred on July 23 at about 8:30 p.m. in the Iyana-Ajara area of Badagry.
He alleged that the defendant stabbed the complainant, Sesede Hunvenu, on her left hand with a knife and also beat her, inflicting severe injuries.
Ekpo said the defendant’s actions caused panic in the area, adding that the offences contravene Sections 206, 171, and 168 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦1 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be either a pastor or a community leader and are required to deposit ₦25,000 with the court registrar.
The case was adjourned until September 3 for mention.
