At least three people were killed and several others injured after a masquerade festival in Lagos Island degenerated into a violent clash allegedly involving rival cult groups.

The violence, which began on Sunday and stretched into the night, saw suspected cultists hurl bottles, wield weapons, and exchange gunfire along Lagos Street.

Videos from the scene showed multiple gunshots and gangs attacking victims in broad daylight.

Residents said the chaos erupted shortly after the festival ended. “We had just finished the festival when a fight broke out among some boys suspected to be cultists. Before we knew it, they had started throwing bottles and brandishing weapons. Everyone ran for safety,” a witness recounted.

Another resident, Kazeem, said the clash lasted until midnight, leaving many unable to sleep due to the noise of gunfire and destruction.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced heightened security in Lagos Island, Lekki, Ajah, and surrounding areas. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally mobilised joint security teams to restore order.

The command disclosed that 23 suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings, following raids on criminal hideouts in Lekki.

A newly formed Anti-Cultism Team and the Eko Strike Force have also been deployed to the area.

“The command has commenced a discreet investigation into the unfortunate incident. We urge residents to cooperate with security operatives to ensure peace and safety,” Hundeyin said.
