The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police has arrested and charged a 37-year-old man, Andre Wright-Walters, in connection with the death of a Nigerian, James Gbadamosi, who was attacked in Balham, South London.
According to a statement released on Monday, Gbadamosi, 67, was assaulted on Balham High Road on August 24 at about 4 p.m.
He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital by responding officers but died on September 5.
The police said Wright-Walters was initially arrested in August and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a Class A drug.
He appeared before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on August 28 and was granted bail.
Following Gbadamosi’s death, Wright-Walters was rearrested on September 6 and charged with murder the next day.
He was brought before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on September 8.
Police also disclosed that a 30-year-old woman was arrested on August 27 on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.
She was re-arrested on September 6 for conspiracy to commit murder but later released on bail pending further inquiries.
The killing of Gbadamosi adds to recent cases of Nigerians murdered in the United Kingdom.
In August, 60-year-old Nkiru Chima was found dead in her Romford apartment with multiple stab wounds, while earlier this year, a London court sentenced Marcus Monzo to life imprisonment for the murder of 14-year-old British-Nigerian schoolboy, Daniel Anjorin.
The rising number of such cases has fueled concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in the UK amid growing hostility toward migrants.
