The Lagos State Police Command has opened a forensic investigation into the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye.

A special unit from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, was deployed on Saturday to Akingboye’s residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Ajah, where detectives cordoned off the premises and collected physical evidence and biological samples.

Family members and domestic staff were also questioned as investigators sought to piece together the events leading to his death on September 3.

Speaking to journalists, his son, Samuel Akingboye, said the family demanded clarity. “I saw him the day before, so it’s very shocking. That’s why I opened the case, to know how he died, because I wasn’t getting any explanation,” he said.

His daughter, Michaella, urged the public to ignore speculation. “I believe the police are carrying out their work diligently.

The truth will come to light, and the whole family stands behind the investigation,” she stated.

Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, assured that no lead would be ignored. “We will not leave any stone unturned to uncover the cause of death. Where there is reasonable suspicion of foul play, those involved will be apprehended,” he said.

The command confirmed the probe in a statement on its official X handle, noting that the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, had been directed to lead the investigation. An autopsy is underway, while some occupants of the residence have been invited for questioning.

Mr. Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, was a businessman and politician.

He served as chief executive officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems, and was president of WeAfrica Group. He also held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.
