UNN guest killed as hoodlums invade students’ event

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has condemned the killing of Mr. Chiebonam Nweze, who was fatally stabbed during a students’ social event on campus last Friday.

The incident occurred on September 12, 2025, at a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

According to the university management, the gathering was infiltrated by hoodlums from a neighbouring community, sparking violence that led to Nweze’s death.

Despite efforts to rescue him, he was confirmed dead before receiving medical attention at the university’s medical centre.

In a statement issued on Monday, UNN’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, clarified that neither the deceased nor the attackers were students of the institution.

He further disclosed that the university’s security unit, working with the Nigeria Police Anti-Cult Unit, had arrested all those linked to the killing.

The university management described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” extending condolences to Nweze’s family and friends.

In response to the tragedy, UNN announced immediate restrictions on social gatherings, directing that all student events must now hold only in the daytime under security supervision, with no activities permitted beyond 6 p.m.

“The University of Nigeria remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence,” the statement added.
