A two-storey building collapsed on Tuesday morning at Akpaka GRA 33 in Onitsha, Anambra State, leaving one person dead and another injured.

Police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday in Awka.

He said the building caved in around 9:00 a.m., trapping occupants under the rubble.

“Unfortunately, one of the rescued victims was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty, while the other is responding to treatment,” Ikenga said. He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited in a hospital morgue for autopsy.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as emergency agencies continue searching to ensure no other victims are trapped.

The state commissioner of police, Ikioye Orutugu, commiserated with the bereaved family and pledged to work with relevant agencies to enhance building safety and prevent future collapses.
