A Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered the remand of a 40-year-old man, Mojeed Adigun, for stealing 50 litres of palm oil valued at ₦128,000.
The presiding magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, gave the order after Adigun pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of stealing.
The court adjourned the case until October 23 for presentation of facts and sentencing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 25 at about 8:30 a.m. at Agbalata Market in Badagry.
Ekpo said Adigun stole the palm oil belonging to the complainant, identified as Zosu Yemi. According to the prosecutor, the defendant was caught by passersby and handed over to the police.
He added that the offence contravened Sections 287 and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribe a three-year jail term for stealing.
