The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of one Mr. Ozioma Okonkwo, a native of Imo State, for allegedly defiling his two biological daughters, aged two and five.
Okonkwo was apprehended on Saturday night, October 25, 2025, following a distress call from a concerned citizen who promptly alerted the authorities.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the two victims have been taken into protective custody at a government-approved shelter under the state Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, where they are receiving medical attention and psychosocial support.
Their mother, said to be deeply traumatized by the incident, is also undergoing therapy under the supervision of the ministry’s social welfare and counselling team.
The Enugu State Government commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift and professional response, which led to the suspect’s arrest.
It reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence, assuring the public that all offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, while condemning the act in strong terms, described it as “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence.”
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to child protection, saying the Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah administration remains unwavering in its efforts to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous acts are brought to justice.
“No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially from those meant to provide care and protection,” the commissioner stated.
The government also appreciated the vigilance and cooperation of citizens who continue to support efforts to safeguard the rights, safety, and dignity of women and children across the state.
