Gunmen on Monday morning ambushed a bank depositor in the Osuntokun area of Ibadan North Local Government, Oyo State, dispossessing him of an undisclosed sum of money and leaving a police officer injured.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was trailed from a bank where he had earlier made a withdrawal before being attacked by the assailants.

One of the witnesses, who preferred not to be named, said the armed men forcefully took a large sum of money from the victim before fleeing the scene.

She added, “A police officer who was on routine patrol was also shot and severely injured during the attack.”

Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said the robbery occurred around 8:00 a.m. along Secretariat Road, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to him, “A bank depositor travelling in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with registration number EPE 901 PS was trailed and robbed of a substantial, yet-to-be-determined amount of cash.

“Preliminary findings revealed that one of our officers sustained serious injuries while attempting to engage the suspects and prevent further chaos.”

Osifeso said there were no fatalities and the injured officer was receiving treatment at a secure medical facility.

He urged residents to provide credible information that could assist in tracking down the perpetrators, assuring that an extensive investigation was underway and updates would be provided in due course.
