Terpror struck again in Southern Kaduna as gunmen on Friday night invaded Damakasuwa community in Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing seven people and injuring one.
Residents said the assailants stormed the community around 8:00 p.m. and began shooting sporadically, forcing villagers to scamper into nearby bushes for safety.
A community source said the attackers operated for several minutes, firing from different directions without any immediate response from security operatives.
The Paramount Chief of Chawai, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad, confirmed the incident, saying five people were shot dead on the spot, while two others who sustained serious injuries later died.
He said the attack had thrown the community into panic but noted that normalcy had been restored following the deployment of military personnel.
“We’ve urged our people to remain calm and allow the security agencies to do their work and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended,” the monarch said.
It was gathered that the gunmen opened fire on residents who were either preparing for bed or still engaged in evening activities.
The latest incident has heightened fear among neighbouring communities in the Chawai axis of Kauru LGA, which has suffered repeated armed attacks, kidnappings, and killings in recent months.
As of press time, efforts to reach the spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful, as no official statement had been issued regarding the attack.
