Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as no fewer than six persons lost their lives in a fatal road crash at the NASFAT junction, Ogun State, while two others sustained serious injuries.

The accident, which occurred at about 2:36pm on Thursday, involved a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck.

The 18-seater bus was said to be travelling from Lagos when it rammed into the truck, which was reportedly making a U-turn near the NASFAT area.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said eight persons were involved in the crash.

He attributed the accident to excessive speed, noting that FRSC personnel from the Mowe Unit and Ibafo Outpost, alongside an ambulance team from the Ojota Unit Command, operatives of the MTD RCCG Police Division and the TRACE Mowe division, promptly responded to the distress call.

Odunsi-Oyewole said some of the injured victims were taken to hospitals by good Samaritans before the arrival of rescue teams, while others were conveyed to Famobis Hospital, Lotto, for urgent medical attention.

“At about 14:36hrs on January 1, 2026, a crash involving a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck occurred at NASFAT junction on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Eight persons were involved, six were killed and two sustained injuries,” he said.

He added that the remains of the deceased were deposited at a morgue, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash had commenced.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, Corps Commander Akinwumi Fasakin, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The latest crash comes days after a separate accident involving Nigerian-British boxer, Anthony Joshua, which reportedly left him injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates, further renewing concerns over speeding and dangerous driving on major highways.
