Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have recovered a firearm and live ammunition after a suspect fled during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Ayetoro–Olodo Road.
The incident occurred when officers attached to the Aiyetoro Area Command were conducting security checks in the area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the yet-to-be-identified suspect, who was riding an unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, took to his heels on sighting the operatives from a distance.
In a bid to evade arrest, the suspect reportedly discarded a single-barrel long gun along with six live cartridges into a nearby bush before escaping from the scene.
“The exhibits were immediately recovered and secured at the command’s armoury,” Babaseyi said, adding that efforts were underway to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspect.
He noted that the ongoing investigation would ensure the suspect is brought to justice.
Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the vigilance of the operatives and reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for illegal possession of firearms.
The police boss assured residents that intensified efforts were being made to rid the state of criminal elements and enhance public safety.
