An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Isa Makwarari, was on Tuesday brought before Magistrate Court No. 53 sitting at Normansland, Kano, over allegations bordering on the unlawful disposal of government and community lands.

The Kano State Police Command accused the cleric of participating in the illegal sale of parcels of land said to belong to the government and host communities, an act the police described as a breach of extant land administration regulations.

The case was presided over by Magistrate Mustapha Sa’ad Datti. At the proceedings, counsel to the defendant informed the court that the defence was not ready to proceed, citing a related matter involving the cleric which is reportedly pending before a higher court in the state.

Responding, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Nura, told the court that the complaint was initially lodged on November 18, 2025.

He added that the police had earlier forwarded the case file to the Kano State Ministry of Justice for legal advice on whether the evidence was sufficient for prosecution or if the matter should be discontinued.

After listening to arguments from both parties, Magistrate Datti adjourned the case to Wednesday, January 21, 2026, for the formal reading of charges and consideration of the defendant’s bail application.
