The University of Calabar has suspended nine students over allegations bordering on examination malpractice and submission of falsified academic credentials.
The decision was conveyed in a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha, following deliberations at the 252nd meeting of the university’s Senate.
According to the registrar, the action was taken after the Senate considered reports presented by its Ad-Hoc Committee on Examination Malpractice as well as the Students’ Disciplinary Committee. The panels had investigated separate cases involving cheating during examinations and the presentation of forged results.
Icha disclosed that five of the affected students were found culpable of engaging in examination misconduct, while four others were indicted for submitting forged results to the institution.
“After a thorough review of the recommendations submitted by the committees, management approved a two-session suspension for the students concerned.
The sanction takes effect from the 2024/2025 academic session,” the statement read.
Those suspended over examination malpractice are Akwuba Enestina, Udom Iboro and Nwankwo Daniel of the Department of Pharmacy, alongside Ore Israel and Chisom Ejafa, also of Pharmacy.
The other students sanctioned for result forgery are Lazarus Ebogo of Home Economics, Ele Godwin of Zoology, Ofem Patrick of Science Laboratory Technology, and Makailu Pamilo of Linguistics and Communication Studies.
The university directed the heads of departments and deans of the affected faculties, as well as the Acting Chief Security Officer, to enforce strict compliance with the suspension order.
The development comes on the heels of disciplinary action at the University of Abuja, which recently approved the expulsion of 28 students over offences including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results and possession of hard drugs.
