The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development in a telephone interview on Monday.

According to him, the incident occurred near the Asham area along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor.

Opeifa, however, noted that no fatalities had been recorded as of the time of filing this report, adding that injured passengers had been evacuated to the Idu Train Station in Abuja, where they were receiving medical attention.

He also disclosed that the corporation had commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment.

“It is confirmed that our Abuja-Kaduna train had an incident around Asham. Some passengers sustained injuries, but there was no loss of life.

The affected passengers have been brought back to Idu Station for medical care, while an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the incident,” he said.
