The tranquil community of Ohatekwe Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, was thrown into grief over the weekend after a 20-year-old man allegedly killed his mother in a shocking act of violence.

The suspect, identified as Damian Oforbuike, reportedly attacked his mother, Onyemaechi Oforbuike, with a machete, sparking outrage among residents. Following the incident, he fled into a nearby forest.

Community youths quickly mobilised to track him down. After a search that involved more than 200 people, they located Oforbuike, apprehended him, and paraded him publicly before ultimately banishing him from the community, warning him never to return.

In a video that has circulated widely on social media, Oforbuike confessed to the killing, claiming he was provoked because his mother refused to bathe him and also declined to provide funds for a shop for his brother, who had completed barbing apprenticeship.

“I killed my mother because she refused to bathe me and also refused to rent a shop for my brother who learned barbing and needed money to start,” he admitted.

The local councillor, Maduabuchi Nweke, confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

He praised the youths for their swift action in apprehending the accused.

The remains of the deceased have been taken to a morgue pending further arrangements.
