A civil society organisation, the Incorporated Trustees of Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN), has raised concerns over repeated adjournments in its alleged murder case against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and Mrs Asabe Waziri.
GICN, the plaintiff in the matter, accused the Nigeria Police Force and Waziri of deliberately stalling the proceedings, a development it said has denied justice to the victim’s family.
The group noted that nearly two years after filing the case, the police have only submitted a conditional appearance, without engaging further in substantive processes.
The suit, filed on May 18, 2024, was assigned to Justice Gladys Olotu at the Federal High Court, Abuja, and has since experienced at least five adjournments.
The civil society group is seeking judicial review by way of mandamus, urging the court to compel the police to release the final investigation report of the alleged crime.
The case concerns an incident dating back to May 30, 2010, when Waziri, an employee of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), allegedly ran over a pregnant woman, Mrs Shitua Aso, in front of the FCT Police Command, Garki 2, Abuja.
GICN’s suit, marked FHC/ABM/CS/742/2024, contends that the police’s failure to provide the investigation report, despite a demand letter dated May 2, 2024, violates sections 4 and 5 of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, and is therefore “unjustifiable, wrongful and illegal.”
In a letter to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court dated January 20, 2026, and signed by its lawyer, Peter Chidiebere Nworie, GICN requested the reassignment of the case to another judge to ensure “expeditious hearing and determination… in the overriding interest of justice.”
The organisation highlighted that Mrs Waziri was joined as the second respondent, although the reliefs sought are strictly directed at the statutory duties of the police.
GICN also noted that on January 12, 2026, while it was represented in court, the respondents failed to appear, and the matter was adjourned to March 23, 2026, due to ongoing courtroom renovations
