A former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party, attributing his decision to ongoing political realignments in the country.

Kwankwaso, who flew the party’s flag in the 2023 presidential election, made his resignation known in a statement released on Sunday.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect,” he said.

The former governor described his exit as a difficult but necessary step, given his long-standing ties with the party.

“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this decision was not taken lightly.

However, in view of the current direction of the nation’s political space, which demands strategic realignment, I have resolved to identify with another political platform that presents a viable opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national progress,” he added.

Kwankwaso also expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership, including its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as other key organs for their support during his time in the party.

He extended appreciation to the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and the National Executive Committee, alongside party structures at the ward and state levels.

The former governor further acknowledged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and supporters of the party for their loyalty and dedication.

“We will continue to work together in pursuit of a more prosperous and united Nigeria,” he stated.

Kwankwaso, however, did not disclose his next political destination.

Meanwhile, credible sources indicate that the former governor is expected to join the African Democratic Congress.

Party insiders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that a formal declaration is likely to take place in Kano, where he will be received by top party officials, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.

It was further gathered that Kwankwaso may align with the ADC alongside the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
