The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected claims of an alleged plot to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the narrative as a contrived political stunt designed to divert public attention and court sympathy.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the opposition party characterised the allegation as a “poorly scripted drama,” insisting that no credible move exists to remove the governor from office.
The APC further alleged that Makinde was approaching the twilight of his political relevance, attributing this to what it described as his “ego and political miscalculations.”
The party also dismissed insinuations linking President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures to the purported impeachment plan, maintaining that such claims lacked substance and should be disregarded.
According to Sadare, the governor would have faced impeachment earlier if the Oyo State House of Assembly had acted decisively on what he termed multiple allegations of misconduct since Makinde assumed office in May 2019.
The development follows denials by some lawmakers in the state assembly, who on Tuesday distanced themselves from any impeachment plot.
The legislators also refuted claims that influential personalities, including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and Florence Ajimobi, were backing such a move.
The controversy deepened after former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, reiterated his allegation that Makinde was plotting to remove the Olubadan, despite earlier rebuttals by both the state government and the traditional institution.
Fayose, in a post shared via his X account, urged the public to watch unfolding events, alleging that recent claims portraying the monarch as partisan were part of a broader agenda to justify actions against him.
He argued that earlier denials of any rift between Makinde and the Olubadan had been contradicted by fresh accusations suggesting that the monarch was involved in a plot to impeach the governor.
But the APC maintained that the impeachment narrative was a deliberate attempt to deflect attention from Fayose’s allegations regarding an alleged plan to dethrone the Olubadan.
The party insisted that there was no genuine interest from any quarters to pursue the impeachment of a governor it claimed had already reached a “political dead end.”
It further accused the Makinde administration of attempting to manipulate public perception through propaganda, adding that the strategy would ultimately fail.
The opposition party listed alleged infractions against the governor, including mismanagement of local government funds, questionable land transactions, inflation of contract costs, and the alleged diversion of a N50bn Federal Government relief fund meant for victims of the Bodija explosion.
It said the allegations, if proven, could amount to impeachable offences and would be brought to public scrutiny in due course.
