A United Kingdom court has sentenced a 61-year-old Nigerian, Anthony Adewale Sobogun, to 28 years’ imprisonment for sexually abusing two children over a 15-year period.
The Metropolitan Police disclosed on Wednesday that Sobogun, who resides on Thistlewood Crescent, Croydon, was convicted at the Inner London Crown Court after he was found guilty of 17 counts of non-recent sexual offences.
The offences, committed between the 1990s and early 2000s, included repeated sexual acts involving a girl below 13 and rape of a minor.
Police said the convict was apprehended in the early hours of July 2, 2025, following an extensive investigation that prioritised the accounts of the victims, enabling detectives to gather critical evidence and secure a conviction.
A detective with the Metropolitan Police, Charlotte Lockyer, attributed the successful prosecution to the victims’ courage in speaking out against the abuse.
She noted that their decision to come forward not only ensured justice but also prevented further harm.
“Their bravery has been instrumental in bringing a dangerous offender to justice.
This case shows that regardless of how long ago such crimes occurred, offenders can still be held accountable,” she said.
In a joint statement, the victims described the case as a reflection of a wider problem, stressing that abuse is often concealed due to fear, stigma, and silence within communities.
They encouraged other survivors to report similar experiences, emphasising that seeking justice remains possible regardless of the time that has passed.
The victims also commended the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the prosecuting counsel for their professionalism throughout the case.
Authorities added that the investigation adopted a victim-focused approach, including the use of specialised interview facilities designed to support sensitive testimonies.
Meanwhile, a separate case earlier reported by PUNCH Metro detailed how another Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, was handed a life sentence for killing a 56-year-old woman in Leicester after attacking her on the street.
